We live on a beautiful island where the sun shines most of the year. That warmth is one of the things that makes Grand Bahama so special. But that same heat — especially when it's humid and you're out working, exercising, or just going about your day — can become genuinely dangerous if you don't know what to watch for.
Every year in my clinic, I see patients who waited too long before coming in. By the time they arrived, what started as feeling a bit "overheated" had become something much more serious. I wrote this for you because heat exhaustion and heat stroke are preventable — but only if you know what to look for.
What Is Your Body Actually Doing in the Heat?
Your body is remarkably clever. When you get hot, it works to cool itself down in two main ways: it sends extra blood to your skin so heat can escape, and it makes you sweat so the evaporation can carry heat away from your body.
But here's the problem: in high heat and high humidity — like a typical Bahamian summer — sweat doesn't evaporate as easily. Your body is working twice as hard to keep cool, and if you're not replacing the fluids you're losing through sweat, your cooling system starts to struggle. This is when heat illness begins.
Heat Exhaustion vs. Heat Stroke: Know the Difference
Think of heat exhaustion and heat stroke as two points on the same dangerous road — with heat stroke being the serious emergency at the far end. Knowing the difference could save a life.
Signs of Heat Exhaustion — your body's early distress signal. You are still sweating and your mind is clear, but your body is struggling:
The good news: if you act quickly, heat exhaustion can be turned around without a hospital visit. But if ignored, it can progress to heat stroke — and it can happen fast.
Signs of Heat Stroke — the body's cooling system has essentially shut down. Body temperature rises above 40°C (104°F) and the brain is affected:
If you see any sign of heat stroke — especially confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness — call for emergency help immediately and begin cooling the person right away. Do not wait to see if it passes. Heat stroke can be fatal within minutes if not treated.
Who Is Most at Risk?
Heat illness can happen to anyone. But research shows that certain groups need to be especially careful — particularly in a tropical climate like ours.
The sun doesn't care how tough you are.
Respect the heat and it will respect you.
What to Do: Treating Heat Exhaustion at Home
If you or someone with you shows signs of heat exhaustion, act quickly. Every minute matters. Follow these steps in order:
Move to a cool, shaded, or air-conditioned space as fast as you can. Stop all physical activity right away. This is the single most important step.
Remove any extra clothing. Apply cool (not ice-cold) water to the skin — a wet cloth on the forehead, neck, armpits, and wrists helps. A fan blowing air over damp skin speeds things up considerably. A spray bottle of cool water is also excellent.
If the person is conscious and able to swallow, give cool water or an electrolyte drink (like a sports drink) slowly. Do not give drinks with alcohol or caffeine — these make dehydration worse.
Have the person lie down with their legs slightly elevated if they feel faint — this helps blood flow back to the brain. Watch them closely for the next 30 to 60 minutes.
If the person is not feeling significantly better within 30 minutes, or if any symptoms worsen — especially confusion or loss of consciousness — call for emergency help immediately. This is now a heat stroke situation.
Prevention: The Most Important Section in This Blog
I will say this plainly: almost all cases of heat exhaustion and heat stroke are preventable. The steps are simple — the challenge is remembering to do them consistently, especially when you're busy or you're feeling fine.
- Drink water before you feel thirsty — thirst is already a sign you're behind
- Aim for at least 8–10 glasses of water daily; more if you're active or outdoors
- Avoid the hottest part of the day (11 AM – 3 PM) for outdoor work or exercise
- Wear light-coloured, loose, breathable clothing
- Take regular breaks in the shade or in cool, air-conditioned spaces
- Never leave children or pets in a parked car — temperatures can reach deadly levels in minutes
- Check on elderly neighbours and family members during hot spells
- Know the signs. Tell your family. Share this blog.
And one thing people often forget: your medications matter. Some common tablets — including blood pressure medicines, water pills, antidepressants, and antihistamines — can interfere with how your body handles heat. If you take regular medication, please ask me or your pharmacist whether it affects your heat risk.
A Special Word About Children and the Elderly
Children can't always tell you they feel sick, and their bodies heat up three to five times faster than an adult's. Young children and infants are especially vulnerable. The elderly may not feel thirsty even when dehydrated, and age-related changes mean their bodies react to heat more slowly — and less effectively. In both cases, heat illness can become severe before anyone realises what is happening.
If you have young children: keep them out of direct sun during peak hours, give them water frequently even if they don't ask, and watch for signs like unusual sleepiness, flushed cheeks, or crying without tears.
If you have an elderly parent or grandparent at home: check on them daily during hot weather. Make sure their home is cool. Bring them cool drinks. And if they seem confused, unlike themselves, or unusually drowsy on a hot day, please bring them in to see me right away. Do not wait.
